The purpose of the masks were so that the dead would have a face and to be recognized in death so that their soul could make the journey it needed in order to reach the state of akh so that it could live on in the after life. Writings in most other places on the coffin, etc., were prayers to gods or death prayers that the dead also needed in order to make the final transformation. Pyramids also contained writings of status and the life of the individual and things the dead needed in the afterlife. What is the purpose of the writings on egyptian death masks?
No clueWhat is the purpose of the writings on egyptian death masks?
I visited the Egyptian Museum in Cairo twice, the guide told us this:
Ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife, and they believed that after a period of time you will be resurrected. The writings will supposedly help you through your new ';life';, and they will guide you what to do in there. They also put some type of bread-shaped stones that will turn into real bread to eat while in the afterlife, plus small statues of people who will be servants to serve you in there.
Most likely it was a prayer or form of blessing to help the dead pharaoh find his way to the afterlife or enjoy some benefit therein. Or else, it would have been to praise some attribute the leader possessed. Just using what I know about ceremonial practices. I'm not an expert on ancient egyptian customs or anything ,though.
