there are various types of theatrical masks , such as greek theatre masks, those neutral white ones that are quite scary and , japanese noh masks etc.
different styles of theatre use different masks for different reasons but the most basic are to denote men/women, status (human/god) or to faciliate multiple role play allowing the same actors to play a range of roles by switching masks.
