Why do executioners wear masks?

im watching The Tudors (HUGE fan, note my name) and im at the part where sir thomas more (moore?) is about to be executed, and his executioner knelt and asked for his forgiveness. So hes not completely malicious or cruel. For what other reason does an executioner wear a mask?Why do executioners wear masks?
this is just my opinion but i would say for privacy reason. not many people are going to talk to you if they know you're an executioner and i am pretty sure there is A LOT of people who would want to kill the person who beheaded their friends or family members.Why do executioners wear masks?
They wear mask to protect their identity from the public. It will not be easy to walk around and people knowing you kill people. Also, they will not want people to know and go to kill the person because of their job.
they dont want to show facial expressions...also most of the victims go to the bathroom as they tense up and relax completely,this is when it happens...
I would think so that 1) no one knows their identity, and 2) it would be more scary for the condemned, like the devil has come to collect.
