Why do some basketball players use plastic masks in their faces?

Players like Richard Hamilton and Sue Bird wear protective plastic face masks to protect and or nurse broken noses. Richard Hamilton wears his for every game because if he breaks his nose one more time, he will not be able to play professional basketball anymore.Why do some basketball players use plastic masks in their faces?
